Think Build

The ‘Think Build’ project brings the construction industry together to inspire young people and open their eyes to the range of career opportunities available within the sector.

The programme not only gave me a wider understanding of the construction industry, but completely changed my career path. During my internship at BAM Construction I was the only girl on the site, screaming at the men to get their helmets on. I loved it!

Caitlin Sillitoe, Career Ready student, Fazakerley High School, now studying to be a quantity surveyor with BAM construction

Think Build was initially developed in partnership with Wates. Other employers supporting include:

  • Arcadis
  • Willmott Dixon
  • Keepmoat
  • Colmore Tang
  • Turner and Townsend
  • BAM
  • Kier
  • Carillion

The construction industry is a rich and diverse sector providing fantastic opportunities. At Wates, we recognise the importance of working with schools and colleges to ensure that we attract the best talent to work for us to meet the needs of our growing business. Through this partnership, alongside other construction organisations, we will inspire the next generation to ensure construction is a career of choice not chance.

Rachel Woolliscroft, Group Sustainability Director, Wates Group

Giving young people access to mentors, workplace visits and paid internships in the construction industry will support the development of a talent pipeline of enthusiastic, work-ready young people and will also help to address the lack of diversity in the sector.

Working with Career Ready is a great fit for Arcadis as they support our vision of ‘Improving Quality of Life’. We are keen to make a difference to the lives of young people and we hope that the students will gain knowledge about the industry and careers within Arcadis as well as learning key soft skills they’ll need in any career.  It is vital that the construction industry shares as much knowledge and information about career opportunities as possible – especially with the skills shortage facing the industry.

Kerry Sneddon, Emerging Talent Recruitment Manager, Arcadis

The programme launched in September 2016, with three construction clusters in Manchester, Birmingham and London.

Working with our partners, Wates, Career Ready is also offering free insight days for 14-16 year olds attending schools in these cities. The aim of the 2.5 hour session is to create a positive experience, awareness and perception of the built environment in a fun and engaging way. The sessions are for up to 50 students at a time and can be run as a morning and an afternoon session to fit into the school timetable.
